anxietyandpanicattacks

Why your first session is free:

Counselling and psychotherapy are about relationships – how you and I establish trust and empathy.  Although one meeting isn’t going to tell us everything, it gives both you and me the opportunity to sense whether we’re likely to feel comfortable working together.

In that no-obligation first session I can gain a better understanding of what problems or challenges you’d like to resolve.

I can then explain how we’d go about finding the solutions to those problems.  Some people decide after that first meeting that I’m not the therapist they’re seeking.  On some occasions, I’ve recommended that clients might be better served by seeing another therapist.  For example, I can’t prescribe medication and for some issues including Depression, medication may be needed.

Having said that, some people have chosen to see their GP or a Psychiatrist to manage the medication side of their treatment and they’ve chosen to see me for the sort of ongoing personalised and individualised support counsellors can offer.

Focusing on your solutions

You are so much more than your problems

I’ve found that when the problem is anxiety, it’s very difficult for even the most creative and competent people to recognise how great they are.  All or most of their daily energy goes on worrying about ...fear.  They simply forget that they are so much more than what's troubling them.

For over twenty years, I’ve been helping people to find their way out of all types of anxiety, including panic attacks, and phobias.  Not surprisingly, I also work with people who are overwhelmed and stressed.

I focus on solutions rather than spending years looking for causes of anxiety.

That’s for a couple of reasons.  First, there’s really no one answer to the question of what causes anxiety.

For some people, it may have a strong genetic component.  For others it develops as a reaction to the environment in which they were raised or in which they’re living now.  Often it’s a combination of Nature – how we’re hardwired to deal with life and anxiety, and Nurture – how our environment affects us.

Secondly and much more importantly for my clients, you want a way out of the constant worry, fear and apprehension that is suffocating your quiet enjoyment of life. That’s what I offer.  Solutions.  Worked out with you.

In my Practice I use a range of approaches because I’ve found that one size definitely doesn’t fit all.

Conquer your fear of public speaking

Many of my clients don’t have anxiety, worry or fear except when they have to speak in public.  That anxiety, sometimes called performance anxiety, is easily treated via my one-on-one coaching sessions.

Specialist support in your life after cancer

As a cancer survivor myself, I know what a shock it is to be diagnosed with cancer.  Let alone go through the surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and in my case hormone therapy.

It's ironic, but surviving a life-threatening illness and its treatment can be challenging in and of itself.

For a start, you're definitely not the same person you were before your cancer diagnosis.  Like most people, your plans were longterm and you probably thought of yourself as robust and healthy - bordering on immortal.  I'm not suggesting that post-cancer treatment means that you're now less robust, or that you have to become negative.  My personal experience and my experience with clients is that from time to time, you may have disturbing thoughts about the cancer returning or about your body image ... or any number of things.

I don't think that a qualified and experienced counsellor has to have experienced cancer in order to offer appropriate support in that field.  Far from it.  However, I believe that my own continuing journey through cancer survival has strengthened my empathy with others who are experiencing the rollercoaster of life after cancer.

Telephone counselling

Once we have established how we'll work together, some of my clients have opted to have some or all, of their counselling sessions by phone.  Face-to-face interactions allow both of us to tune in to body language and facial gestures so they make for a richer level of communication.  However, I've had many highly successful counselling sesssions by phone.

Some people choose phone counselling because it saves time on travel, and it's less disruptive to their day.  That's especially the case for busy parents or people who work from home.

Other clients opt for telephone counselling because they're not confident about driving, or they're not ready to leave the safety of their own homes.  One of the ways I know we're succeeding in managing their anxiety issues, is when they feel fine about coming to my rooms for a face-to-face consultation.

Home visits, by negotiation

With telephone counselling being an option, most people won't need to rely on home visits but that can be negotiated.  Some people, particularly those with agoraphobia, prefer face-to-face counselling but at the beginning of their treatment, they can't manage the journey to my rooms.

Anxiety

Dr Jeannette Kavanagh specialises in working with people who have anxiety – fear, worry and apprehension that disrupts their enjoyment of life.

Anxiety that makes them think twice about going to concerts, speaking up at work, travelling on trains, driving on freeways.

Of course a certain amount of anxiety is a very important part of our lives. Without it, we’d never study for exams, prepare the speech for our daughter’s wedding or even pay attention crossing the road.

If you’re reading this, you know that the anxiety that Jeannette deals with is a level of irrational fear that is making your life very uncomfortable and unpleasant.
